Lady Miners' hard play gets win
The win was important for the Lady Miners, who had two close league losses at Perryville and Pottsville in succession. "I actually thought after the Magnet Cove game a week from this past Friday, we played just horrible," said Bauxite head coach Joshua Harrison. "We had a little gut-check and honestly, in the locker room after the Magnet game I was disgusted. They came out Saturday with a little different attitude and played extremely hard, but we missed a few free throws that cost us at Perryville. "We had a couple of pretty good days of practice, especially last Thursday - they were strong and focused in practice," Harrison added. "If you could ever be distracted for not even thinking about basketball, Friday was it. We had team pictures, it was Senior Night and we had our first basketball pep rally where they talked about everyone. We didn't get to do our shoot-around because of that, but we came out and I think those kids were not going to get beat on Senior Night. They willed themselves to win. We played an unbelievable game against Harmony Grove. I really think we played well."
The Lady Miners led 15-14 after the first quarter. Boshears and Crow both had four points, with Courtney Canada hitting for three, while Ali Sanders and Amanda Bradbury both had baskets. Bauxite moved out to a 28-19 halftime lead behind the shooting of Marshall, who had five points in the period. Sanders put in three points, Boshears and Crow both had baskets and Bradbury added a free throw. In the second half, Crow led a 12-point third period with six points, while Sanders, Canada and Marshall all had two points. In the fourth quarter, Marshall heated up with 11 points, Boshears came out with eight points, while Crow and Katie Riddling both had one free throw apiece as the Lady Miners broke the game open.
Bauxite lost to Pottsville 53- 47, then stepped out of the conference to defeat Lisa Academy substantially, 72-8. "We were able to work a little bit against Lisa Academy and try do some things," Harrison said. Bauxite jumped out to a 19-2 lead with seven points from Crow. Bradbury and Boshears both had four points in the period with Marshall hitting one basket. In the second quarter, the Lady Miners opened up a 34-5 lead with Bradbury, Boshears, Marshall, Canada, Riddling, Sanders and Alycia Barnard all had two points. In the fourth period, Meagan Creekmore led with eight points, Barnard put in six points, Riddling scored four points, while Bradbury, Marshall and Kayla Freeman had two points each. Bauxite outscored Lisa Academy 24-0 in the final stanza. Against Pottsville, the Lady Miners held a 16-14 lead, and held on to a 28-24 halftime advantage. The Lady Apaches came back to tie the game 36-36 after the third quarter. The Lady Miners trailed 16-14 after the first period with Crow, Sanders and Canada all getting four points each. Creekmore put in a basket as did Riddling. Bauxite tied the game at halftime 26-26 behind six points from Bradbury. Marshall, Crow and Casey Bridges all had two points before the break. The Lady Miners were outscored 12-8 in the third period with Marshall hitting for four points. Bradbury and Boshears each had baskets, then in the fourth quarter, Crow hit for five points, Bradbury added four more points and Boshears added a basket in the loss. "At Pottsville, we had an outstanding effort and outstanding intensity, but we missed free throws and layups in that one," Harrison said. "I thought we were on the right rack and had a real good shot of winning that game." The Lady Miners played Atkins on Tuesday night in the first round of the 5AAA District tournament. A win there meant they would play today against the winner of Pottsville and Mayflower. |
