Bauxite eighth-grader wins bee with spelling 'proficiency'

The eldest and youngest spellers finished first and second, respectively, in the Saline County Spelling Bee recently.
Winning the bee was eighthgrader Daniel Davis of Bauxite High School. He is the son of Jerry and LaNita Davis of Bauxite.
Third-grader Mark Dufek of Bryant's Collegeville Elementary School placed second.
Davis will represent Saline County at the state spelling bee March 8 at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Dufek is the alternate who will represent the county if Davis is unable to attend. Davis received a $50 U.S. savings bond donated by Union Bank. Dufek won a Franklin Spelling Ace spelling calculator donated by Office Depot.
County contenders were chosen at school spelling bees. Other competitors included:
•Angie Grant Elementary School, Benton: fifth-graders Austin Brimhall and David Flora.
•Benton Middle School: seventh grader Justin Nowlin and sixth-grader Kelli Palmer.
•Bethel Middle School, Bryant: eighth-grader Jordan Dunn and seventh-grader Bruce Roberts.
•Bryant Middle School: eighth-grader Trent Rivers and sixth-grader Jon Scott.
•Caldwell Elementary, Benton: fourth-grader Sam Eddington and fifth-graders Caroline Minton and Grant Moens.
•Collegeville Elementary, Bryant: fourth-grader Clyn Baker.
•Davis Elementary, Bryant: fifth-graders Christopher EspiDaniel noza and Jzavine Cohen.
•Howard Perrin Elementary. Benton: fifth-graders Bailey Doggett and Anna Harcourt.
•Pine Haven Elementary, Bauxite: fifth-grader Kealy Cotton and sixth-grader Chris Kilburn.
•Ringgold Elementary, Benton: fourth-grader Jordan Herbner and fifth-grader Corey Poe.
•Salem Elementary, Bryant: fifth-grader Baylie McLaren and third-grader Ashlie Sparks.
•Saline County Home School Association: seventh-graders Dakota Johnson and Brea Johnson and sixth-grader Hope Wakeling.
•Springhill Elementary, Bryant: third-grader Brandon Evans and fourth-graders Alexis Lorio and Amber McFadden.
