The Bauxite Miners are preparing for their toughest test yet in the AAA state football playoffs.
The Prescott Curly Wolves come to 'The Pit' on Friday to face the Miners in the state quarterfinal round. Prescott defeated Atkins 48-14 to advance, while the Miners blasted the Mayflower Eagles 43-12.
"I know that Prescott has a good team," said Bauxite head coach Jon Watson. "We're going to have to play our best."
The Miners are rolling off the momentum of a 186-yard, three-touchdown performance from fullback Tommy Wimberly against Mayflower.
"Tommy carried us on his shoulders all night," said Watson. "He was the first one to tell me that all the credit went to the offensive line."
A Bauxite fumble on its first possession of the game led to a 47-yard touchdown run from tailback Deshawn Bagby to put Mayflower up 6-0.
Then Wimberly took over.
Wimberly had eight carries on a 14- play, 98-yard drive that was capped off by his 9-yard touchdown run with 10 seconds to play in the first quarter. Peter Whitfield added the extra point to put Bauxite up 7-6.

Wimberly's second touchdown came with 4:55 left in the second period after a Mayflower failed fourth down conversion attempt at the Bauxite 12. Wimberly carried five straight times and punched the ball over from two yards out. He added a 2-point conversion run to make it 15-6 Miners.
The Eagles put together a 65-yard scoring drive before halftime with quarterback Jordan Dycus passing to receiver Bryan McKnight for a 31-yard touchdown to close the Bauxite lead to 15-12 by halftime.
A 35-yard pass from Bauxite quarterback Aaron Mathis to receiver Austin Hicks set up three carries from Wimberly for 27 yards. Wimberly rumbled in from eight yards out with 3:22 to play in the third period to up the Miners lead to 22-12.
Following another failed fourthdown attempt by Mayflower, Wimberly ran for 19 yards on first down to set up a 6-yard touchdown run from Ryan for a 29-12 lead with 16 seconds left in the third quarter.

After the ensuing kickoff, Dycus was intercepted by Bauxite's Blake Childress, who returned the pick 34 yards for a touchdown as time ran out in the third period. Bauxite led 36-12.
Miner Peter Whitfield intercepted a Dycus pass in the fourth period, and then caught a 33-yard pass from Mathis to set up an 18-yard touchdown run from Dunlap for a 43-12 lead.
"We knew they had speed and everything that could go wrong in the first half did for us," Watson said. "Things just started clicking for us in the second half."
The Miners improved to 10-1 overall.
"We challenged them at halftime to get them to play," Watson said. "We were on the verge of breaking out in the whole first half."
Wimberly's unselfishness showed in his accolades for his teammates.
"We executed our plays," he said. "The offensive line blocked well and we ran it down their throats. We took over in the third quarter. Hopefully, against Prescott we'll play better."
