The Benton Panthers playoff hopes are alive and well.

After destroying the Little Rock Parkview Patriots and a subsequent loss by El Dorado 38-6 to Lake Hamilton will set up a showdown at C.W. Lewis Stadium on Friday night between the Panthers and the Wildcats. The winner gets to go the 6A-State playoffs and the loser stays home.

"We're taking a lot of momentum into the El Dorado game this Friday," said Benton head coach Marcus Jones. "We know we're still playing for a playoff berth and that's a good thing to be doing at this time of year."

The Panthers started fast against Parkview. A 63-yard pass from quarterback Zac McCauley to Mark Adkins set up a 3-yard touchdown run from McCauley out of the new 'Panther' offense, which highlights Kody Hamlin at quarterback and McCauley in the backfield. Jorge Couto added the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the first quarter.

Tony Swopes deflected a Parkview punt on the last play of the first quarter, then the Panthers offense moved the ball down field with McCauley passing to Colby Roberts and Adkins. Couto booted a 32-yard field goal after the 8- play drive to put Benton up 10-0 with 8:14 to go in the first half.

Following another Parkview punt, the Panthers drove in for a touchdown on a 1-yard run from McCauley. Mc- Cauley highlighted the nine-play drive with a 22-yard pass completion to Adkins. Couto's extra point made it 17-0 Panthers with two minutes left before halftime.

Austin Sams picked off a Parkview pass on the Patriots first series of the third period. Runs by Edrick Coggins and McCauley passes to Adams and Adkins set up a 33-yard field goal from Couto to make it 20-0 with 7:19 to go in the third quarter.

The Benton defense came up strong again with a fumble recovery that was returned 12 yards by Tyler Oglesby. On the next play, Hamlin completed a 59-yard touchdown pass to Josh Davis. Couto added the extra point for a 27-0 lead with 4:39 left in the third.

The Panthers defense kept Parkview away from scoring distance for the rest of the game.

"Special teams helped us," Jones said. "Jorge had two field goals and the defense played great. Our offense executed well and I think we only turned the ball over one time. We ran it and threw it. It was the most complete game we've played all year. This football team has had a lot of adversity this year and we've found a way to come through it. We showed a lot of character and I'm proud of the kids for that."

Benton amassed 376 total yards of offense against the Patriots, who have already beaten Watson Chapel this season. Mc- Cauley was 10-of-18 for 180 yards through the air, while Hamlin completed his only attempt for 59 yards. Adkins led all receivers with four catches for 93 yards, Roberts had three catches for 59 yards, Adams caught two passes for 19 yards, Davis had one reception for 59 yards and Garrett Parker had one catch for nine yards.

Defensively, David Pugh, Swopes, Jarrod Larsen, Sams, Josh Dodson and Olgesby led in tackles.
