The Glen Rose Beavers continued their advance toward the 8AAA Conference title Friday night, smashing the Smackover Buckaroos, 46-6, in Smackover. The victory lifts the Beavers to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in league battle with only two weeks remaining in the regular season. The Bucks slide to 2-6 on the season and 1-6 in 8AAA play.

"We came out and delivered a knock-out punch early like we wanted to and got to play a lot of different people," said Glen Rose head coach Billy Elmore. "We didn't look as crisp as we have this season, but I was pleased that we dominated early."

Dominating early is what Glen Rose has done all season. The Beavers raced to a 25-0 lead over the Bucks by halftime, on their way to 534 yards total offense. The Beaver defense held the Bucks to only 157 yards for the game.

"It's new territory for us," Elmore said of his team's overwhelming success this season. "But our guys have worked hard to get here, and I think they're handling it really well."

Quarterback Nathan Jones connected with fellow senior Michael Blancher on a 12-yard pass play at 10:21 in the opening stanza to set the tone of the game. Kicker Brant Abbott nailed the PAT for a 7-0 Beaver lead.

With 7:45 remaining in the first quarter, Jones found junior receiver Bo Mitchell for a 51- yard TD completion to bump the Beaver lead to 13-0. Abbott's follow-up kick was failed, and the score stood at 13-0. But not for long.

Glen Rose opening the second quarter of play with another impressive drive, capping it off with a Jake Jones TD run from 11 yards out. This time Glen Rose went for the 2-point conversion. The attempt was unsuccessful, and Beavers settled for a 19-0 lead with eight minutes to go in the half.

At the 6:07 marker, Glen Rose's Jones went once again to his favorite receiver of the night, Mitchell, who hauled in an 18-yard pass to make it 25-0, the halftime score after another at a 2-point conversion failed.

Glen Rose came out in the second half to take up where they had left off. Junior Trevor Newcomb powered into the end zone on a 2-yard run with 5:49 remaining in the third. Abbott's extra-point kick was true, and the Beavers were in cruise control with a 32-0 bumper.

Smackover snagged their only points of the night after senior defensive back J Keith tipped a pass into the happy hands of a Buckaroo receiver who then raced in for a 61-yard TD. The score was now 32-6 with Glen Rose still holding a very comfortable lead.

The Buckaroos had little time for celebration. Blancher, in at quarterback, bolted in for a 32- yard TD on clever draw play. Abbott's PAT was good making it a 39-6 game.

Glen Rose locked in on what would be the final, 46-6, at 11:20 in the fourth quarter when Newcomb scored on a 2-yard run.

Senior tailback Doug Vinson passed the 1,000-yard mark during the game, finishing the night with 116 yards on just 10 carries. Vinson owns 1,096 yards so far this season.

Elmore commented on the milestone saying, "A lot of people think, 'Oh well, they run the spread. You're not going to get many rushing yards. Right now, we've had 1,549 yards passing and 1, 877 rushing. That's pretty balanced. So, a running back not getting his yards in a spread offense - that's obviously not true."

Quarterback Nathan Jones hit a milestone of his own completing 15 of 23 passes for 255 yards and 3 TDs, his best showing to date. For the season, Jones has completed 85 of 164 passes for 1,356 yards and 21 TDs.

Bo Mitchell caught four of those passes Friday night for a total of 77 yards.

Michael Blancher, who leads the team in receiving this season with 26 catches for 626 yards and 12 TDs, had five catches Friday night for 58 yards. J Keith pulled down three deliveries for 60 yards.
