Lady Hornets run second, boys fifth at Russellville
MARTIN COUCH Sports editor

BRYANT CROSS COUNTRY MARTIN COUCH PHOTOS The Bryant Lady Hornets finished second at the Russellville Invitational meet on Saturday, while the Hornets ran fifth overall. The teams will take a week off to prepare for the Chili Pepper.
The Bryant Hornets struggled to a fifth place finish at the Russellville Invitational on Saturday, coming in behind team champion Conway, Lake Hamilton, Fayetteville, and Fort Smith Southside.

Todd McAdoo (ninth place in 17:32), and Josh Harrison (17th place in 18:07) earned individual awards with top 20 finishes.

"Although Todd McAdoo ran a good race, I really expected him to have some company from some of his teammates, but our next man was 36 seconds back," said Bryant boys coach Steve Oury. "We had too many key people who just didn't come out and compete. This was a course that you can't come from behind on very easily. We did not get off to a good start and things didn't get any better later.

"I thought Jacob Clark had an outstanding race. He finished in our top five today and the way he works he might just stay there," the coach added. "We just need to get better at stepping up and competing, regardless of where we are, who we are competing against , what the weather is like, or how our legs feel. Champions find a way to succeed when faced with adversity, so we need to take the next couple of weeks in training to get tougher both mentally and physically. These guys have won championships before, but their past accomplishments don't count for anything on race day. You've got to earn it each time you step to the line."

The Hornets will take next week off and then will compete at the Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville on Oct. 13th.

Bryant junior boys

The Bryant junior Hornets learned the importance of getting off to a good start at the Russellville Invitational on Saturday. On a course the starts straight up a hill and gets narrow very quickly, the junior Hornets got off to a poor start and were out of the running for a team victory before the race had covered a half-mile. The junior Hornets placed third behind Russellville and Lake Hamilton.

Ashton Arnoldy (10th in 12:00) and Luke Lindsley (17th in 12:24) earned top 20 awards for the junior Hornets.

"I'm really pleased with how Ashton Arnoldy is running," Oury said. "He has a lot of natural ability and he works hard. He did a great job. Luke Lindsley competes as hard as anyone out there. I always know that he is going to give everything he has. Lucas Castleberry finished

Lady Hornets just out of the top 20 but competed well considering he wasn't feeling well.

"I was disappointed with how we started the race," the coach added. "We talked about the importance of getting off to a good start, and yet when the gun went off we got left behind going up the hill. We did a good job of battling to get ourselves up to third, but it would have been nice to get off to a good start so that we could have had a chance to win the meet. Next week at Lake Hamilton we will try to make sure we are a little more aggressive at the beginning so that we are where we need to be when the course starts to narrow."

The Bryant Lady Hornet cross country team took home the runner-up trophy for the fourth consecutive meet Saturday at the Russellville Invtational. Fayetteville won the meet.

The Lady Hornets were led by Sara Coker, Lennon Bates, and Nicole Darland who all garned top 20 medals. Sam Wirzfeld and Lola Fleming finished out the scoring for Bryant.

"Our senior girls competed hard, but right now we have some people injured who we hope will be back this week," said head coach Danny Westbrook. "We are starting speed work this work also, so hopefully we can start turning these runner-up finishes into victories."

Bryant junior girls

The Bryant junior girls also took home the runner-up trophy.

Russellville won the meet with Lake Hamilton finishing in third. Dylan Vail, running for the first time in two weeks because of an injury, led Bryant with a fifth place finish to take home one of the top 20 medals.

Stacie Waite, Callie Smith, Stepanie Cyz, Lauren Reed, Natalie Graham, and Bailey Freyaldenhoven finished out the junior Lady Hornets top seven.

"Our junior girls ran strong, but we have some big time gaps between our top runners that we need to reduce if we want to start collecting victories," Westbrook said.
