The Glen Rose Beavers routed Rison, 50-28, in Rison, earning the respect of Wildcat players and fans alike.
The victory moved the Beavers to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in 8AAA Conference play. Rison falls to 2-3 and 1-1.
The performance also locked in another week for the Beavers as the state's best Class AAA football club.
"It's was a good win for us, that's for sure," commented Glen Rose head coach Billy Elmore. "I think our guys defi- nitely earned some respect. I don't think I've ever been congratulated by as many of the opposing team's fans as I was after that game. I think with the kind of tradition they have at Rison - they respect good football. It was a good win."
Glen Rose manhandled Rison at every facet of the game, but nowhere was the control as apparent as on the line of scrimmage.
"Our offensive line dominated," said Elmore, praising the play of seniors Bubba Rimmer and Ethan Jones and juniors Brad Porter, Jimbo Scrimshire and Jacob Lankford.
"They gave us plenty of time to throw and opened up lanes for us to run," added Elmore, "That's all you can ask for."
Senior quarterback Nathan Jones connected on 11-of-24 passes for 151 yards. That average would have been higher had it not been for six dropped Beaver passes in the second quarter.
"Nate hit them [the receivers] in the numbers, but the passes were dropped," lamented Elmore. "That's something we just can't do."
Dropped passes aside, the Beavers went to the air for their first two scores of the night. The first came at 7:38 in the first quarter when Jones found J Keith for a 5-yard completion. Three minutes later, Jones delivered the ball air-mail to Michael Blancher for a 71-yard touchdown. Extra points by Brant Abbott made the score 14- 0, Glen Rose.
Rison answered Blancher's TD at 4:40 of the first, following up with a 2-point conversion to make it a 14-8 game.
The Beavers came right back and made it 21-8 on a 2-yard carry by Jake Jones with 2:37 to play in the opening stanza. With a scoreless second quarter, the tally stood at 28-8 at the half.
Rison had their best showing in the third quarter, closing to within seven points of the Beavers with 10 minutes remaining in the game. The one-two punch of the pass and run Beaver combo proved too much for the Wildcats.
Senior Glen Rose running back Doug Vinson, who finished the night with 250 yards and three touchdowns on 28 hauls, opened the second half with the first of his three scores. Vinson carried in from 11-yards out with 7:34 left in the third quarter. Abbott's follow-up made it 35-8.
Rison answered with a 25- yard touchdown pass two minutes later. The extra point put the game at 28-15, Glen Rose.
At 4:42 in the third quarter, Jones handed to Vinson, who rushed 69 yards in for a Beaver score. Abbott nailed the pointafter for a 35-15 Glen Rose lead.
Rison added two more touchdowns in the third quarter to close the gap to 35-28. That would be as good as it got for the Wildcats.
Four minutes into the final stanza, Vinson reestablished Glen Rose's dominance with a 33-yard romp into the end zone. The point-after made it a 42-28 game.
The Beavers landed the knockout blow with 3:49 remaining, this time on a 44-yard touchdown pass play from Jones to Blancher. (Blancher ended the night with 80 yards on two catches.) Jones hit his brother, Jake, for a 2-point follow-up for the final, 50-28.
Defensively, Jake Jones led the Beavers with 15 tackles, three for losses. John Zuber and Dustin Norwood each had 10 tackles.
"We didn't have to change a lot from what we worked on all week," said Glen Rose defensive coordinator Mark Kehner. "We had one breakdown on our technique, which allowed them to score in the third, but other than that, I was proud of our kids. I thought they gave great effort and overcame a lot to win down there [in Rison]. There's a lot of pride down there and they put the pressure on you."
The Beavers go to work this week to prepare to host Camden Harmony Grove (2-3) on Friday.
