Council approves long-term sewer plan

The Bryant City Council last week approved a 20-year wastewater plan. The plan was prepared by Crist Engineers Inc., of Little Rock. The plan takes into account the city's forecast growth. Crist said the city now has 14,713 residents served by city sewer. By 2028 that number will rise to 31,464.

'Pot' find leads to arrest

For the third year in a row, a Paron man has been arrested on marijuana charges. Saline County Sheriff's Department Capt. Scott Courtney said Kenneth Slade was arrested near his home at 16731 Slade Road about 6 a.m. Thursday morning.

Bryant council puts annexations up for votes

Annexation of several of Bryant's outlying areas took a step closer to reality last week when the city council voted unanimously to put the matters on ballots. Two of the area - the Midland- Hilldale and Springdale area will be on the general election ballot in November.

Bike sales increase as gas edges higher

Severe erosion near Interstate 30 Exit 117 in Benton has been repaired for $200,000. Torrential rains damaged the highway's drainage system this spring. "We had some pretty serious erosion down there," said Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department spokesman Randy Ort.

Farm family enjoys rural life, hard work

Eight years ago, Rev. Jerry and Dena Whitley had no farming experience. He had been serving a church nine years in Texas ranching country. After being called to pastor First Pentecostal Church of Bryant, the Whitleys bought 316 acres near Crows in 2000, and soon added 40 more acres. They have never slowed down.

There was an article last week about Applebee's applying for a liquor license - to serve liquor as a private club like a couple of other places in Benton. It stated that Mayor Holland, the Sheriff and the Chief of Police would all be notified. Mayor Holland was quoted as saying he had no objections to it. Don't get me wrong; I respect Mayor Holland.

The tournament started on Friday night and the girls played one game and lost to the Northeast Arkansas Heartbreakers which placed PP in the loser's bracket. On Saturday, their first game was at 9:00 in the morning and the girls won.
